As a solo artist, he pursued a black radical agenda as well as indulging in ghetto fantasies and developing a parallel career in films. Nowadays, he may be better known for the Fridaymovies, but much here proves his surly but oddly elegant rhyming, classic funk samples and hard-edged beats can still impress.
